Famous educationist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the alleged NEET paper leak and demand for education reforms, has been admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after her health deteriorated. Following the instructions of Delhi Police and High Court, he was transferred to the emergency ward of the hospital. However, despite being on the hospital bed, Sonam Wangchuk has not ended her fast and is continuing her hunger strike with the help of salt and water only. If seen from a reporter’s point of view, due to this fast that has continued for more than 20 days, there is deep concern among his supporters regarding his health.

Medical Bulletin of Safdarjung Hospital: What did the doctors say?

According to the official health update issued by the team of doctors of Safdarjung Hospital (VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital):

  • Vitals stable: Sonam Wangchuk’s blood pressure (BP), pulse rate and oxygen saturation (SpO2) have been recorded within normal limits and she is fully conscious.

  • Severe dehydration: Due to fasting for 21 consecutive days, clear signs of dehydration (acute lack of water) and weakness are visible in his body.

  • Refusal of Intravenous Drip (IV Fluids): According to media reports and medical bulletins, Wangchuk has refused to take oral liquids or drips (IV fluids), leading doctors to warn that his condition is at risk of worsening without medical intervention.

Family and supporters put forward demands

Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo Has raised questions on the stand of the hospital administration and Delhi Police:

  • Demand for investigation from private doctors: The family has appealed that Wangchuk be given family consent and examined by independent doctors before any major medical treatment is given.

  • Call to continue the movement: Wangchuk issued a message from the hospital and appealed to the supporters to make the announcement of peaceful protest and Parliament march successful at their respective levels.

Expressing concern over Sonam Wangchuk’s health, students and social organizations across the country are demanding the government to take immediate cognizance of their demands.
