The deal with Adani Energy to supply solar power in Andhra Pradesh was done against the advice of the authorities. This proposal was suddenly put forward by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on 15 September 2021. The agency dealing with solar energy and solar sector development wanted to know whether it wanted to sign the largest renewable energy agreement with Andhra Pradesh.
Two years ago, Andhra’s Energy Director had predicted 10-year energy needs and said that the state currently had no short-term need for solar energy. It should also take into account other modern energy systems. A day before SECI approached the state government, the 26-member cabinet headed by then Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy had given preliminary approval to the deal. This solar energy deal is currently under investigation in America. A case of bribery and fraud has been registered against Adani and seven other officials in America. US prosecutors allege that the defendants paid a bribe to an Andhra official worth Rs. A bribe of Rs 1,936 crore was offered.
Andhra Pradesh with Rs. Deal worth Rs 4161 crore made
Adani Group’s name was not in SECI’s letter. However, on November 11, the state government got permission from the Energy Director to purchase solar energy. On December 1, state officials signed an agreement with SECI for the deal. Whose annual cost is Rs. 4,161 crores. 97 percent of this amount was to be allocated to Adani Green of Adani Group.
