So far 175 people have died due to landslide in Wayanad, many missing, rescue operations are going on

The death toll from the landslide following heavy rains in Wayanad, Kerala has reached 175. 131 people are in hospital, while 220 people are reported missing. Landslides occurred in Mundakai, Churalmala, Attamala and Noolpuzha villages at around 2 am and 4 am on Monday. Houses, bridges, roads and vehicles were washed away.

Teams of Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, Police and Dog Squad are engaged in rescue operations. By late night, 1 thousand people were rescued, 3 thousand people have been sent to rehabilitation centers. 225 army personnel have been sent from Kannur to Wayanad. A large part of Churalmala village has been washed away due to 3 consecutive landslides in a few hours.

The army is handling the rescue operation here. There is water on the roads, there is devastation everywhere. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in Wayanad as well as Malpuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod districts. Due to this, there may be problems in rescue operations today. Two Air Force helicopters were sent for rescue during the day but due to rain they had to return from Kozhikode.

The Kerala government has declared two days of official mourning in the state after the accident. School and college holidays have been declared in 12 districts on July 30. Kerala University has postponed all examinations scheduled for July 30 and 31. New dates will be announced later.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George, who was on her way to Wayanad to take stock of the landslide incident, was injured in a road accident on Wednesday (31 July) around 7.30 am. She has been admitted to the Medical College in Manjeri, Malappuram. The accident happened while trying to save a scooter rider.
