Shimla, 27 April (HIST). Due to the activity of Western Disturbance in Himachal Pradesh, the weather took a turn last night and there was rain and snowfall in many parts. Fresh snowfall occurred in tribal districts Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur along with upper reaches of Kullu and Chamba. 8 cm snowfall has been recorded in Gondla, 3 cm in Hansa and 2 cm snowfall each in Keylong and Kukumseri. While the weather has become cold due to snowfall in the hilly areas, there has been relief from the scorching heat in the plains.
The mercury has dropped to minus in Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti. The minimum temperature recorded here on Saturday was -0.3 degrees Celsius.
Strong winds blew in many plain districts of the state, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, Kangra and Mandi. At some places, hail fell along with rain, due to which the wheat crop was damaged. These days, wheat harvesting work is going on in full swing in the plains.
There has been power failure in many areas due to transformer failure due to the storm. According to the State Emergency Operation Center, 532 transformers have failed across the state as of Saturday morning. 194 transformers are closed in Chamba, 110 in Kullu, 101 in Mandi, 57 in Kinnaur and 45 in Una. At the same time, 3 national highways and 60 roads have been blocked due to snowfall. Of these, 55 roads are closed in Lahaul Spiti. Two national highways in Lahaul-Spiti and one in Kullu are also stalled.
The Meteorological Department has predicted that the weather will remain bad till May 1st. Yellow and orange alerts have been issued for rain, snowfall and thunderstorms in the state for the next three days. There will be yellow alert on 28th and 30th April and orange alert on 29th April. There is a possibility of a storm on April 28 at a speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. And on April 29, there can be a storm with a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. Most parts of the state including the capital Shimla remained cloudy on Saturday.
During the last 24 hours, 21 mm rainfall has been received in Teesa, 19 in Manali, 16 in Bharmour, 10 in Dalhousie and 10 in Palampur.
