We all know how unhealthy smoking is. Most of the cancer cases recorded in the world today are due to smokers, chain smokers and second-hand smokers.
No matter how much awareness is spread about the harm of smoking, the number is not decreasing. Instead, more and more youth are getting addicted to this smoking. It is known that inhaling the smoke of this cigarette is dangerous not only for the smoker but also for those next to the smoker.
But here is a rare and strange case of a man whose smoking habit has resulted in hair growing inside his throat. The 52-year-old Austrian man who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years continuously has developed a rare disease. Hair started growing in his throat and he did not have any hair for exactly 14 years.
This condition is known as endotracheal hair. The main reason for this is his smoking habit. According to a report in the American Journal of Case Reports, the patient first went to the doctor in 2007 complaining of hoarse voice, difficulty in breathing and chronic cough. By this time, 5 cm long hair had grown on his throat. According to him, he had started smoking cigarettes since 1990.
But in 2006, he started showing symptoms of the disease. This was followed by an increase in the number of hairs in his throat. Thus, tracheotomy treatment was inevitable. When the hairs started blocking oxygen from reaching his lungs, he was given a tube. Then the hole in his throat was closed using skin and cartilage grafts from his ear.
After this, the doctors operated on him and removed six to nine 2-inch long hairs, but the hair started growing back. The man kept going to the hospital every year for 14 years to get his hair removed.
According to doctors, smoking cigarettes is considered to be the main reason for hair growth. After quitting smoking in 2022, the rate of hair growth on the neck decreased, then stopped completely. Later, endoscopic argon plasma treatment was also done to destroy the hair growing cells, after which hair growth stopped.
Thus, this new problem has also joined the list of problems caused by smoking. This does not mean that hair cells develop in this way in everyone. This is the first and strange case.
