Ahmedabad: The Indian smartphone market grew 7.2 per cent year-on-year in the first six months of 2024. 6.9 crore smartphones were supplied during this period. According to data from the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker by International Data Corporation (IDC), 3.5 million smartphones were supplied to dealers in the market during the second quarter of calendar year 2024, showing a growth of 3.2 per cent over the previous year. However, this was the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth in shipments. The year-on-year recovery was limited due to sluggish consumer demand and rising average selling price.

Apart from clearing old stock in the first half, companies started launching new smartphones in the mid-premium/premium category for the monsoon sales in July and August.

According to IDC, the average selling price of smartphones increased by 2.8 percent compared to last year. However, it fell by 5.6 percent quarter-on-quarter to around $248. In the premium category, the share of the base premium ($200 to $400) category increased from 22 percent to 30 percent, led by strong performance from Apple and Samsung, with a 42 percent year-on-year increase, IDC said.
