Mumbai: The uptrend in Indian stock markets was halted in early session today after slight fluctuations in global markets following the minutes of the US Federal Reserve, Sensex, Nifty based FMCG and Consumer Durables frontline stocks Titan, Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India, ITC among others improved. The index based strength along with the attraction of Small, Mid Cap, A Group of Funds, High Net Worth Investors, Players led to a feel-good atmosphere among investors. Selective buying was seen in FMCG, Consumer Durables stocks as well as Healthcare-Pharmaceuticals, Automobiles, Metals, Capital Goods stocks. Sensex closed 102.44 points higher at 80905.30 after oscillating between 80626 and 80953. While Nifty 50 spot closed 71.35 points lower at 24770.20 after oscillating between 24654 and 24788.
FMCG stocks rise
FMCG stocks rose today as funds, high net worth investors resumed widespread buying. Gillette India rose by Rs 214.95 to Rs 8261.55, Hindustan Unilever rose by Rs 39.25 to Rs 2789.95, Nestle India rose by Rs 32.70 to Rs 2551.70, ITC rose by Rs 6.45 to Rs 805.30. BSE FMCG index closed up 301.13 points at 22957.31.
Healthcare index jumped 393 points
Healthcare- Pharmaceuticals stocks witnessed broad buying today. Ajanta Pharma rose Rs 122.80 to Rs 3081, Divi's Lab rose Rs 177.80 to Rs 4899.05, Bajaj Health rose Rs 14.60 to Rs 30 India rose Rs 827.60 to Rs 28,619, FDC rose Rs 15.05 to Rs 523.70, Unichem Lab rose Rs 16.30 to Rs 581.10. BSE Healthcare index closed 392.59 points higher at 42007.77.
Metal index increased by 230 points
Funds continued to buy metal-mining stocks. Funds continued to buy metal stocks on expectations of increase in import duty on steel and anti-dumping measures to benefit the domestic steel industry. Vedanta rose Rs 8.65 to Rs 455.10, Hindalco rose Rs 12.90 to Rs 685.50, Coal India rose Rs 7.80 to Rs 532.05, SAIL rose Rs 1.80 to Rs 135, APL Apollo rose Rs 12.80 to Rs 1360.10, JSW Steel rose Rs 8.70 to Rs 925.50, Jindal Steel rose Rs 7.85 to Rs 957.35. BSE Metal index closed 230.44 points higher at 31979.22.
2607 stocks closed positive
Out of total 4038 stocks traded on BSE, number of gainers increased from 2371 to 2607 and number of losers increased from 1561 to 1345. BSE Midcap index rose 205.04 points to close at 48318.28 and BSE Smallcap index rose 479.93 points to close at 55336.42.
Investors' wealth increased
Investors' wealth i.e. total market capitalisation of BSE listed companies also rose by Rs 2.38 lakh crore to Rs 459.24 lakh crore in a single day as prices of many stocks rose as a result of a broad rally in small, mid-cap stocks today.
DII purchases worth Rs 3097 crore
Today on Wednesday, FIIs sold shares worth Rs 799.74 crore in cash. While DII-domestic institutional investors made net purchases of Rs 3097.45 crore in cash today.
