Slowdown in large caps, but rise in mid cap-small stocks

Today, after swinging between profit and loss, the major indices of the Indian stock market closed with losses for the third consecutive session.

However, buying was seen in midcap and smallcap stocks. There is a recessionary atmosphere in the market due to poor results of companies and continuous selling of foreign funds.

After initially opening 299 points below the 80,000 level, the Sensex made an intraday high of 80,646 and low of 79,891 and closed at 80,081, down 138 points or 0.17 per cent, after a total of 755 points. Nifty also opened 94 points lower and hit an intraday high of 24,604 and low of 24,378. After a total gain of 226 points, Nifty finally closed at 24,435, down 36 points or 0.15 per cent. After yesterday's heavy fall, shares rose in the broader market today. The BSE mid-cap index closed 222 points or 0.48 per cent higher at 46,196, while the small-cap index closed 499 points or 0.93 per cent higher at 54,030. The BSE SME IPO index also closed 1,294 points or 1.34 per cent higher at 97,828.

Of the total 4,031 stocks traded on BSE today, 2,096 closed higher, 1,827 declined and 108 closed flat. BSE M cap today increased to Rs. 445.31 lakh crore i.e. 5.30 trillion dollars, which was yesterday Rs. Rs 444.45 lakh crore. An increase of Rs 86,000 crore is visible. 9 out of 30 Sensex stocks closed with gains, while 18 out of 50 Nifty stocks closed with gains. In the Sensex pack, Bajaj Finserv gained 4.79 per cent and Tech Mahindra gained 2.28 per cent, while M&M fell 3.23 per cent and Sun Pharma fell 2.57 per cent. Among Nifty stocks, Bajaj Finance gained 4.90 per cent while Eicher Motors declined 2.07 per cent. The volatility index rose 1.31 percent today to 14.40. Out of 14 sectoral indices on Nifty, 8 closed with a fall while 6 closed with a rise. Nifty Auto index fell by 0.71 per cent, Pharma by 1.56 per cent and Healthcare by 1.40 per cent. Whereas the IT index closed at 2.38 percent.
