Slovakia caused a major upset by defeating title favourites Belgium 1-0 in a Euro 2024 football Group E match after much fanfare and controversial decisions by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Romelu Lukaku scored in the final minutes of the match to level the score at 1-1.
But the video assistant referee called it a handball and disallowed the goal. Earlier, Amadou Onana's header goal was also disallowed. Belgium is third and Slovakia 45th in the world rankings. In the seventh minute, Ivan Saranz scored a goal and gave the Slovakian team a 1-0 lead. Belgium took five shots on goal in the match but all were unsuccessful. Belgian players passed the ball to each other 573 times in the match and the long passing also tired Lukaku and his frustration was clearly visible in the last minutes. Belgium's substitute Johan Bakayoko, who came on the field in the 90th minute, came close to scoring a goal but Slovakia's goalkeeper David Hanchko performed brilliantly and stopped the goal.
