A major accident has come to light in Supaul, Bihar. The slab of the bridge under construction on Kosi river suddenly fell and in this accident one laborer died and many laborers are feared buried. This is not the first time that an accident related to an under-construction bridge has taken place in Bihar, many such incidents have happened before also.
Last year a bridge had collapsed in Bhagalpur
In June 2023, an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bhagalpur, Bihar. A video of the collapse of the bridge under construction between Khagaria-Aguwani-Sultanganj was revealed, in which it was seen that within no time the entire bridge got submerged in the river Ganga. The surprising thing was that two years ago also a part of this bridge had collapsed. The foundation stone of this bridge was laid by CM Nitish Kumar in 2014. The total cost of this bridge was Rs 1717 crore. Due to the storm in April, some part of this under construction bridge was also damaged.
The bridge collapsed before inauguration
In December 2022, a bridge built over the Gandak river in Begusarai also collapsed in a similar manner. This bridge of Gandak River was being built at a cost of Rs 14 crore.
A look at such incidents in Bihar
- On 15 May 2023, a box bridge collapsed during casting in Purnia. The incident took place at Salim Chowk, Miliktola Haat of Chandragama Panchayat, Block 82. In the month of February itself, a case of collapse of a bridge built at a cost of Rs 1 crore 14 lakh due to the slough of Bayseen came to light. Two laborers were seriously injured in this incident. Then, within 3 months, the bridge collapsed again.
- In June 2022, also in Saharsa district, an under-construction bridge inside the East Kosi Dam under Simri Bakhtiyarpur block had collapsed. That police station was to be constructed at a cost of Rs 147 lakh. The department then said that the contractor was asked to change the centering. But the contractor completed the casting of the bridge in a hurry.
- Not only this, before this the Sultanganj-Aguwani bridge section had also collapsed, about which it was said that the bridge was damaged due to storm and water. Before this, the access road to Shri Krishna Setu was concreted. Gopalganj bridge also cannot be forgotten. Just a few days after the inauguration, the approach path was washed away by the strong current of the river. All these incidents became headlines in political circles as well as across the country.
- In July 2022, 10 workers were injured when a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) bridge under construction in Katihar district of Bihar collapsed. A bridge was being constructed at a cost of Rs 1 crore on Kosi Canal to connect two blocks of Katihar, Sameli and Barari. Its foundation stone was laid in 2021 itself.
- Earlier, bridges under construction in Kishanganj, Saharsa and Bhagalpur had collapsed even before inauguration.
