Sitaram Yechury passes away, CPM general secretary was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Delhi | News India

Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has passed away. He was ill for some time.

He was 72 years old and was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi.

Sitaram Yechury breathed his last at 3:03 pm today at AIIMS, the CPI(M) said.

“Our dear Comrade Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) General Secretary, passed away at AIIMS today. Lal Salaam to Comrade Sitaram Yechury,” the CPI(M) tweeted.

In a statement issued by the CPM on September 10, it was said that Yechury was suffering from a serious respiratory infection.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the demise of Sitaram Yechury and described him as a leading leader of the Left parties.

PM Modi wrote, “Yechury was known for his ability to maintain contacts with all political parties. He also left his mark as an MP. My condolences are with his family and fans in this hour of grief.”

The family donated the body

SFI, the student wing of CPIM, wrote on the demise of Sitaram Yechury, “Students Federation of India has lowered its banner in honour of its beloved and former President of SFI, CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.”

According to news agency ANI, Yechury was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on August 19. He was first admitted to the emergency ward and then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The CPI(M) tweeted that Yechury had developed a respiratory infection, which later turned serious.

Following Yechury's death, the party flag was also flown at half-mast at the CPI(M) office in Delhi.

“Sitaram Yechury is no longer the general secretary of CPIM. He was admitted to AIIMS,” CPIM leader Hannan Mollah told ANI.

In a press release issued by AIIMS, it has been told that 72-year-old Sitaram Yechury was admitted on 19 August 2024 due to pneumonia. He breathed his last on 12 September at 3:05 pm.

According to the press release, Yechury's family has donated his body to AIIMS for teaching and research.

CPI(M) has said that Sitaram Yechury's body will be kept at the party headquarters i.e. AK Gopalan Bhavan in New Delhi for the last darshan between 11 am to 3 pm on September 14. After this, his body will be taken to AIIMS for medical research.

Sitaram Yechury was one of the big names in Indian politics. He was a member of the Politburo of CPM for 32 years. He was the general secretary of the party since 2015. Sitaram Yechury was also a Rajya Sabha MP from 2005 to 2017.

On August 22 last month, while he was admitted to AIIMS, Yechury had paid tribute to former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya in a video message.

In his message, he had said, “It is very unfortunate that I have to express my feelings for Buddho Da and say Lal Salaam from AIIMS itself.”
