To crack down on the increasing cyber frauds, digital arrests, online banking scams and mobile connections issued through fake documents in the country, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) of the Government of India have implemented stringent rules. Many times common citizens do not even realize that by misusing the copy of their identity card, some anti-social element or cyber criminal has activated another SIM card. The Department of Telecommunications has issued clear guidelines and fixed the maximum number of SIM cards in the name of a citizen and under the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ project.   • What will happen if there are more than 9 SIMs: If more active connections are found in the name of a person than the prescribed limit (9 or 6), then the Department of Telecommunications directs the telecom operators (Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, BSNL) to re-verify those numbers. If the additional numbers are not re-verified within the stipulated time, the outgoing services of the connections are suspended and subsequently they are permanently blocked. There is also a provision for financial penalty on violators.

To prevent fraud, the government has made comprehensive changes in the SIM sale and verification process:

  1. Paper Form (Physical SAF) Closed: The old system of purchasing SIM by submitting paper photocopies at shops has been completely stopped. Now the new SIM is issued only through digital medium i.e. Aadhaar based biometric e-KYC or ‘Face Authentication’.

  2. Strict police verification of POS (Point of Sale) dealers: Police verification of all retailers, shops and agents selling SIMs and biometric registration with telecom companies has been made mandatory. There is a provision to blacklist agents issuing fake SIMs and impose heavy fines on them.

  3. 24 Hour SMS Lock on SIM Swap: If a person re-issues his lost SIM or swaps a new SIM, then for security reasons, incoming and outgoing SMS services are stopped for the first 24 hours, so that bank OTP fraud cannot be done.

This portal is linked to the database of all telecom service providers across the country. Through this, any citizen can find out through his primary mobile number how many mobile numbers are currently active on his ID.

Follow these simple steps to view the list of total SIM cards issued in your name:

  1. Official website of Sanchar Saathi in the web browser of your mobile or computer sancharsaathi.gov.in or directly tafcop.sancharsaathi.gov.in Open.

  2. Go to ‘Citizen Centric Services’ section on the homepage ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ Click on (TAFCOP) option.

  3. Enter your 10 digit active mobile number in the box and fill the captcha code given below.

  4. Validate CAPTCHA Or ‘Request OTP’ Click on.

  5. You will receive a 6 digit one-time password (OTP) on your mobile number. By entering OTP ‘Login’ Click the button.

  6. Once you log in, a list of all the mobile numbers registered on your ID (including the first and last digits of the numbers for security reasons) will appear on the screen.

If a number appears in the list that doesn’t belong to you, that you never purchased, or that you haven’t used in a long time, follow these steps to deactivate it:

  • Select Number: Tick ​​the checkbox given in front of the mobile number which you want to delete or deactivate.

  • Select option: You will get three options on the portal:


    • ‘This is not my number’: If you never purchased this number and it is being used on your ID through some fraud, then choose this option.

    • ‘Not required’: If this SIM was previously yours but you no longer use it and want to permanently deactivate it, select this.

    • ‘Required’: If this number is in your use, leave it untouched.

  • submit report: After choosing the appropriate option given below ‘Report’ Click the button.

  • Save ticket reference number: As soon as the report is filed, a Ticket Reference Number Will be visible and SMS will also come on your number. Through this number you can track the status of your complaint on the portal anytime.

  • Action of Department of Telecommunications: After receiving your report, the Department of Telecommunications informs the concerned telecom operator. The operator sends a notice to the user of that number for re-biometric verification. If verification is not done within the stipulated time, that number is deactivated and blocked forever.

To keep your digital identity and bank accounts safe, visit the TAFCOP portal from time to time (every 3 to 6 months) to review your registered SIMs. Do not share your photocopy of your identity card or biometric thumb impression with any unknown person, unauthorized SIM vendor or unauthorized mobile app. A small check done in time can keep you safe from any major cyber fraud or legal complications.
