Suspicious death of 17 monkeys in Bemetara, Chhattisgarh!
About 20 monkeys died and four mutilated bodies were found in a village in Chhattisgarh's Bemetara district. The forest department has started an investigation into the matter. A gram panchayat official said that some villagers hired two labourers to drive away the monkeys, who shot and killed 17 monkeys. However, a forest department official denied the claim and said that the cause of death of the monkeys is yet to be ascertained. Some suspects are being questioned.
Belgaum Gram Panchayat Panch Sitaram Verma told a news agency on Monday that the incident took place in Belgaum village on August 28 when some villagers hired labourers to drive the monkeys away from the settlement and opened fire. Some monkeys were also injured in this. A meeting was recently called in the village to hire labourers to keep an eye on monkeys invading homes and damaging horticultural crops. I opposed it as Kapiraj is worshipped as Hanuman. I do not agree with taking violent steps to harass them.
What did the forest department official say?
Regarding this claim, the DFO of Durg Forest Division said that so far four rotten bodies of monkeys have been recovered from the village. He said that a search operation is being carried out to get information about the death of 18-19 monkeys in the area. Postmortem of the bodies brought was not possible because the bodies were completely rotten. Only skeletons are left. The samples have been sent for forensic examination.
