London, March 21 (Hindustan Reporter) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's ambitious 'Rwanda Bill' is stuck again. This bill was voted on on Wednesday in the House of Lords, the upper house of the British Parliament, but it could not be passed. Members of the House of Lords have sought amendments to the bill.
According to the X-handle posts of London's leading newspapers 'The Times and The Sunday Times', Sunak has already been criticized in the House of Lords on the issue of flight delays. Now he has suffered another blow on the Rwanda bill. He requested the MPs to unite on this bill. The government says the Rwanda bill aims to stop refugees coming to Britain illegally across the English Channel. Last year, 29,437 people reached Britain through the English Channel. Meanwhile, along with opposition leaders, some leaders of the ruling Conservative Party have also supported amending the bill.
its purpose
Under the Rwanda Bill, the British government will send people seeking asylum to Rwanda. From there they will be able to apply for asylum in Britain. The British government had paid 240 million pounds to Rwanda for refugees by the end of 2023.
in limbo for two years
The Rwanda Bill was announced in April 2022 during the government of Boris Johnson. In November last year, the Supreme Court of Britain had said on this bill that Rwanda is not a safe country for people seeking asylum in Britain. After this, the Sunak government introduced the 'Safety of Rwanda Bill' in the House in December. If this bill had been passed by Britain's upper house, the House of Lords, the Supreme Court's decision would have been bypassed.
Labor Party's stance
The opposition party Labor Party is against this bill. He has announced that even if the bill is passed, it will be withdrawn when he comes to power. It is noteworthy that general elections are to be held in Britain in January next year.
