Amidst the ongoing suspense over the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) MPs met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament on Wednesday. This meeting took place a day after Shinde resigned from the post of Chief Minister, paving the way for the formation of a new government. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena faction is continuously trying to retain the chief minister’s post and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is insisting on its own candidate for the top post.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske went to meet Shah in the middle of the ongoing Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. News agency ANI quoted sources as saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) high command is scheduled to meet Mahayuti leaders including Praful Patel, Ajit Pawar, Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde in Delhi tomorrow (Thursday).
It is pertinent to mention that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reached the national capital on Wednesday. He is expected to meet top BJP leaders to resolve the impasse over the decision of the state Chief Minister. When asked about the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Fadnavis said that discussions are going on and an answer will be given soon.
Fadnavis told the media, “This will be answered soon. “Senior leaders of the three parties of the Grand Alliance are trying to take decisions together.” Speaking on other ministerial posts, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the decision for the post of Chief Minister will be finalized first, after which the remaining appointments will be made.
Earlier today, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat stressed that the next Chief Minister should be from Shiv Sena.
Speaking to ANI, Shirsat said, “We want the CM to be from Shiv Sena. We had contested the elections under the leadership of CM Eknath Shinde and I am confident that top leaders will support him. You can expect that the new government in Maharashtra will be formed by December 2. The swearing-in ceremony will be held on a grand scale, possibly at the Wankhede Stadium.”
Maharashtra election results were declared on November 23, but the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is yet to decide on the name of the chief minister. The Mahayuti alliance won a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The saffron party emerged as the single largest party by winning 132 seats in the 280-member Maharashtra Assembly, while its allies – Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP – secured 57 and 41 seats respectively.
