Mumbai: After Eknath Shinde today tendered his formal resignation from the post of Chief Minister despite Mahayuti getting a clear majority in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Governor asked him to remain the acting Chief Minister till the new Chief Minister takes oath. On the other hand, Shinde Sena indicated that whatever decision Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah take on the issue of Chief Minister’s post, we will accept it. The tenure of the state assembly ended today but the government has not been formed yet.
Shinde formally resigned from the post of CM three days after the results were declared. In such a situation, the question remains whether he is now withdrawing from the race for the post of CM.
In the results declared last Saturday, Mahayuti got a clear majority with 230 seats out of 288. BJP alone has got 132 seats. BJP wants to make Devendra Fadnavis the CM but Eknath Shinde is adamant on continuing on this post and the situation is complicated.
In Delhi, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale said that the BJP leadership has decided to make Devendra Fadnavis the Chief Minister for the third time. However, BJP has not supported his claim.
Shinde and Fadnavis were present at the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s office early on Tuesday to pay tribute to the martyrs of the 26/11 terror attack, but did not exchange a single word.
However, today Shinde, Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar along with Governor C.P. Met Radhakrishnan. Where Shinde submitted his resignation from the post of Chief Minister.
Deepak Kesarkar, a minister in the outgoing government, said that Shiv Sena workers want Shinde to remain the CM. However, we will respect the decision of the BJP high command on this issue.
Meanwhile, Shinde Sena workers from across the state are coming to meet Shinde at his official residence in Mumbai. Today Shinde Sena has appealed to the workers not to gather here.
