Who is Sheikh Hasina?
Born on 28 September 1947, Sheikh Hasina is the eldest daughter of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Her early life was spent in Tungipara in East Bengal. She did her schooling here. After this, she also lived in Segun Bagicha for some time. Then her entire family moved to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
How did you come into politics?
Sheikh Hasina initially had no interest in politics. She became interested in politics in 1966 when she was studying at Eden Women's College. She contested the student union elections and became the vice-president. After this, she decided to take charge of the student wing of her father Mujibur Rahman's party Awami League. Sheikh Hasina was also active in Dhaka University politics.
Killing of parents and brothers
In the year 1975, Sheikh Hasina's life was turned upside down. The Bangladesh Army revolted against her family. Armed terrorists killed Sheikh Hasina's mother, father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and three brothers. At that time, Sheikh Hasina was in Europe with her husband Wajid Miyan and younger sister and luckily they survived. After the murder of her parents and three brothers, Sheikh Hasina lived in Germany for some time. Then the Indira Gandhi government gave her refuge in India. She moved to Delhi with her sister and stayed here for about 6 years.
Sheikh Hasina returned to Bangladesh in 1981. When she arrived at the airport, lakhs of people came to welcome her. After returning to Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina decided to continue her father's party and contested the first general election in 1986. Although she faced defeat in this election, she was elected the leader of the opposition. The first independent election was held in Bangladesh in 1991. In this election, Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League did not get a majority. Her opponent Khaleda Zia's party came to power.
Elections were held again in 1996. In this election, Shauk Hasina's party came to power with a huge majority and Sheikh Hasina became the Prime Minister. She faced defeat in the 2001 elections, then she returned to power in 2009 and has been the Prime Minister continuously since then.
