Mirzapur, June 24 (HS). The footpath of Shastri Bridge built on the Ganga river connecting Mirzapur to Purvanchal collapsed after a truck loaded with sand ran over it. The accident happened last night. The district administration had also banned the entry of heavy vehicles for safety reasons. This is the situation when crores of rupees have been spent in the name of repairing the bridge in the last three years.
Shastri Setu once again broke from the edge. Since 2020, the bridge has been repaired three times at a cost of crores. Despite the entry of heavy vehicles being prohibited, the western edge of the pathway broke last night when an over-loaded sand laden truck climbed onto the bridge's pathway. The contract for the repair of this bridge, built 45 years ago, was given to Mumbai-based company R&M International. This dilapidated bridge connects the Duddhi-Lumbini road. Union Minister of State Anupriya Patel had also written a letter to the government to investigate the irregularities in the money spent in the name of repair. Rs 8 crore in the year 2020, Rs 5.64 crore in 2021-22 and Rs 7.48 crore in 2023 have been spent in the name of repair.
