Shankaracharya's statement: A controversy has arisen over the statement given by Jyotishpeeth's Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati on Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray. Shankaracharya's statement is being termed as political and inappropriate. Delhi's Saint Mahamandleshwar and Shrimahant Narayan Giri of Shridudheshwarnath Math Temple have condemned it. He said that Shankaracharya is the head Peeth in Hindu tradition. His job is to perform Puja and it is inappropriate for such a worshipper to go to someone's house and give a political statement. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam has also said something similar. Now Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand himself has responded to this defamation.
In a video clip on social media, Avimukteshwarananda says, we are sanyasis. We should not make statements on politics. This is absolutely true. He said, we believe in this principle, but politicians should also not interfere in matters of religion. If Prime Minister Modi goes to a temple and establishes religion, then you people show him live. If Shankaracharya says something about politics, it is considered wrong. He said that politicians should stop interfering in religion. We guarantee to stop talking about politics. But if you are constantly interfering in religion, then should we talk about religion.
We are not talking about any politics: Avimukteshwarananda
Shankaracharya Avimukteshwarananda, who is a politician, should he not follow his religion? As a Shankaracharya, should we not call someone a true Hindu? Should we not warn the public against the sin of betrayal? Look, if you are religious, you should not betray anyone. He said, we have not talked about politics. We have talked about religion. Nothing happens just by saying that we are Hindus. When we know the essence of religion and adopt it, we will become Hindus. Shankaracharya said, in order to keep religion prominent in its true form in the lives of people, it should be defined from time to time. If Shankaracharya does not do this, then assume that he is not doing his job. Therefore, wherever we get an opportunity, we define religion. We have nothing to do with politics.
What did Shankaracharya say about Thackeray
Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth Swami Avimukteshwarananda said on Monday that Uddhav Thackeray is a victim of betrayal. After meeting Thackeray at his residence Matoshree in Bandra, Mumbai, Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati said, “Uddhav Thackeray has been betrayed and some people are angry with this.” On his request, I met him and told him that the pain of the people will not subside until he becomes the Chief Minister for the second time.
