Kolkata, 13 April (HS). Sheikh Shahjahan, who is in ED custody after his arrest in the Sandeshkhali case, has also claimed, like other Trinamool leaders, that he was forced to give the statement in custody. He has said that the ED officials took the statement through intimidation. Shahjahan's lawyer Zakir Hussain told the Bankshall Court on Saturday that he wants to withdraw the statement given by Shahjahan to the Central Investigation Agency.
Earlier, Balagarh youth leader Kuntal Ghosh, implicated in the recruitment corruption case, and Shankar Aadhya, implicated in the ration corruption case, had also made the same complaint against the Central Investigation Agency.
The hearing of Sandeshkhali case was held in Bankshall Court on Saturday. During the hearing, ED lawyer Arijit Chakraborty applied for judicial custody of Shahjahan in Bankshall Court. He claimed that Shahjahan knew who testified in the case. Therefore, if Shahjahan is released now, there may be difficulties in the case.
The Central Investigation Agency's lawyer also told the court that Shahjahan has many non-income assets. At that time Shahjahan's lawyer Zakir presented a handwritten paper in the court. He told the court that that paper contained Shahjahan's statement and he wanted to tell it to the court.
Shahjahan's lawyer claimed in the court that a statement was forcibly obtained from Shahjahan by intimidation while in ED custody. Threats were made that if he did not give the statement, he and his family would be implicated in drug and women trafficking cases. However, ED said that there is a need to check whether the signature on the paper is that of Shahjahan or not. The court has scheduled the next hearing of the case on April 15.
