Several FIRs registered in Punjab for insulting the reputation of the Chief Justice of India

Chandigarh: Taking strict action against illegal and objectionable social media content tarnishing the reputation of the Honorable Chief Justice of India, Punjab Police today registered multiple FIRs against more than a hundred social media handles in different districts of the state following complaints received.

Giving information in this regard, a spokesperson of Punjab Police said that social media content related to attack on high constitutional authority, caste-based insults and inflammatory content, and clear attempt to disturb peace and public order by misrepresenting caste and communal sentiments on social media have been identified and FIRs have been registered as per law. He said that these posts and videos contain casteist and hateful content which is aimed at creating communal division, disturbing public order and undermining the respect of judicial institutions.

Giving information in this regard, a spokesperson of Punjab Police said that this social media content contains illegal and objectionable content with the aim of tarnishing the reputation of the Honorable Chief Justice of India. He said that the content of these social media posts include posts with the intention to incite violence and target a constitutional post, posts with the intention to deliberately intimidate and insult any member of a Scheduled Caste, attempt to promote enmity, hatred and narrow-mindedness against any member of a Scheduled Caste, to incite enmity between groups on the basis of caste and to cause deliberate insult and public abuse with the intention to disturb peace. Giving information in this regard, a spokesperson of Punjab Police said that after receiving information about serious crimes, FIRs have been registered in various police stations under sections 3(1)(R), 3(1)(S) and 3(1)(U) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and sections 196, 352, 353(1), 353(2) and 61 of the Indian Penal Code. He said that further investigation of these FIRs is going on as per law.
