Sensex fell 106 points to 80004 due to two-way volatility

Mumbai: Index-based gains in global markets as well as Indian stock markets came to a halt today as new US President Donald Trump warned the world of imposing more tariffs ahead of his inauguration. Funds stayed away from fresh trade on Sensex, Nifty based bulls, which turned soft at the end of a narrow range today. Funds bought in IT-software services, technology stocks as well as select FMCG, metal-mining stocks, while heavy selling in automobile stocks and selling in healthcare, oil-gas, power stocks weakened the market. Sensex fell two-way between 80,483 to 79,798 and fell 105.79 points to close at 80004.06. While Nifty 50 crashed between spots 24344 and 24125, it finally fell 27.40 points to close at 24194.50. However, small cap stocks retained their selective appeal.

BSE Auto index fell 673.29 points to close at 52921.21 as funds booked huge profits in automobile companies again today. Bajaj Auto fell by Rs 286.70 to Rs 9139.55, Cummins India fell by Rs 67.10 to Rs 3467, Mahindra & Mahindra fell by Rs 56.95 to Rs 2987.85, Tata Motors fell by Rs 13.55 to Rs 783.25, TVS Motors fell by Rs 66.65 to Rs 4935 Maruti Suzuki fell by Rs 96.70 to Rs 10,930, Hero MotoCorp fell by Rs 24 to Rs 4836.90.

Funds sell in healthcare stocks: Poly Medicare falls by Rs 228 to Rs 2775: Fortis Health, Lupine fall

Funds of healthcare-pharmaceutical companies were also selling today. Poly Medicare fell by Rs 227.70 to Rs 2775, Fortis Healthcare fell by Rs 36.15 to Rs 664.60, Lupine fell by Rs 71.65 to Rs 2035.65, Krishna Diagnostic fell by Rs 30.85 to Rs 992.85. Gland Pharma fell by Rs 38.10 to Rs 1738. Sequent Scientific fell Rs 4.60 to Rs 197.05. BSE Healthcare index fell 256.08 points to close at 43128.81.

Metal-mining stocks rise: Jindal Stainless, Jindal Steel, APL Apollo rise

Shares of Indian steel and metal companies rose amid newly elected US President Donald Trump’s warning of harsher tariffs and hint of possible tariffs for China. Jindal Stainless increased by Rs 14.70 to Rs 688.80, Jindal Steel increased by Rs 15.75 to Rs 891.95, SAIL increased by Rs 1.85 to Rs 115.95, APL Apollo increased by Rs 23.15 to Rs 1481.65, JSW Steel increased by Rs 10.55 to Rs 963.90, Vedanta. Hindalco rose by Rs 4.40 to Rs 448.55, Hindalco rose by Rs 6.05 to Rs 665.80.

Sugar shares rise: Shree Renuka Sugar, Balrampur Chinese, Bajaj Hindustan, Uttam Sugar, Dalmia rise.

Chinese-FMCG stocks again saw widespread buying by funds today. Funds gained momentum, especially in Chinese stocks. Shree Renuka Sugar increased by Rs 2.47 to Rs 42.44, Balrampur Sugar increased by Rs 29.80 to Rs 565.80, Bajaj Hindustan increased by Rs 1.29 to Rs 32.45, Uttam Sugar increased by Rs 9.75 to Rs 291.80, Dalmia Sugar increased by Rs 14.05 to Rs 424.85 Triveni Engineering & Sugar It rose by Rs 18.45 to Rs 602.15 and by Rs 11.05 to Rs 393.45. While ADF Foods rose by Rs 18.45 to Rs 323.55, KSCL rose by Rs 45.85 to Rs 887.30, ATFL rose by Rs 35.30 to Rs 885.95.

IT index rises 480 points: Ramco Systems, Infosys, Sonata, Quick Hill rise

Funds again made heavy purchases in IT-software services, technology stocks today, leading to a rise in many stocks. Ramco Systems rose by Rs 34.20 to Rs 428.90, Sonata rose by Rs 43.10 to Rs 594.65, Dynacons Systems rose by Rs 78.25 to Rs 1367.50, Signity Technology rose by Rs 89.15 to Rs 1627.65, Quick Hill Technology rose by Rs 22.65 to Rs 601.45, D-Link India Up by Rs 19.65 at Rs 559.75, Zensar Technology up by Rs 22.95 at Rs 748.95, Infosys up by Rs 32.70 at Rs 1921.85, LTI Mindtree up by Rs 101.40 at Rs 6217, TCS up by Rs 34.15 at Rs 4351.85, Wipro up by Rs 6.30 Was Rs 589.05. BSE IT index closed at 43611.48, up 480.34 points.

Market sentiment remains positive as funds remain bullish on small cap stocks: 2224 shares closed positive

Market sentiment remained positive as Sensex, Nifty-based remained positive today and finally there was selective buying in many small cap stocks against weakness. Of the total 4031 stocks traded on BSE, the number of gainers was 2224 and the number of decliners was 1705. The BSE Small Cap index closed 333.94 points higher at 53923.24 and the BSE Mid Cap index closed 46.92 points higher at 45800.47.

Top gainers in the group today were TTML up Rs 12.09 or 17.50 per cent to Rs 81.17, Garden Rich Shipbuilders up Rs 99.40 to Rs 1541.10, CGCL up Rs 17.15 to Rs 211.80, Piramal Enterprises up Rs 89.55 to Rs 1197.35. Idea Vodafone rose by Rs 55.00 to Rs 7.53, Marksons rose by Rs 21.80 to Rs 337.50, Sendur Manganese rose by Rs 28.10 to Rs 478.10, Thirumala Chemical rose by Rs 22.25 to Rs 344, Power India rose by Rs 2.25 to Rs 344. Rs 662.60 to Rs 12,327.45.

Foreign portfolio investors – FPIs, FIIs made net purchases of shares worth Rs 1157.70 crore in cash today on Tuesday. There were sales of Rs 9813.48 crore against total purchases of Rs 10,971.18 crore. While DII-Domestic Institutional Investors made a net sale of Rs 1910.86 crore in cash today. There were sales of Rs 10,317.01 crore against total purchases of Rs 8406.15 crore.
