Stock Market Closing: Amid widespread selling in the Indian stock market, the Sensex and Nifty closed with a decline for the second consecutive day. Today the Sensex closed down 692.89 points at 78956.03 and the Nifty closed down 61.50 points at 24285.50. This has resulted in a loss of Rs 4.43 lakh crore to investors' capital.
After a flat opening in the morning session, the Sensex today fell 759.54 points. In the Sensex pack, 23 stocks closed down by 3.46 per cent except Titan which fell 1.78 per cent, HCL, Nestle, Sun Pharma, Reliance, Bharti Airtel and Mahindra & Mahindra. The top losers were HDFC Bank (3.46 per cent), Bajaj Finance (2.15 per cent), Tata Motors (2.10 per cent), Tata Steel (2.07 per cent) and SBI (1.93 per cent).
Profit booking in all stocks except consumer durables
In the sectoral index, profit booking was recorded in all sectors except consumer durables. The consumer durables index closed up 1.45 percent. While the index fell 1.16 percent due to heavy selling in small caps. With the bumper listing of SME IPOs, the SME IPO index closed in the green zone.
Domestic stock markets declined in the second half amid mixed sentiment globally. Despite the positive effects of low retail inflation and IIP growth in the manufacturing sector, the market crashed due to massive selling and profit booking by foreign investors.
