Mumbai: In global markets, with the recovery in Europe as well as strength in futures in US stock markets and the possibility of incentives by the domestic NDA government including Union Budget stimulus and income tax concessions to boost economic growth, local and foreign funds, high net worth investors led the stocks to a historic rally today. Funds made selective heavy purchases in banking-financial services, capital goods, power, consumer durables, IT stocks. Funds' attraction towards technology, IT stocks was seen increasing on the back of the rise in the US stock market Nasdaq. Along with this, funds traded briskly after the modest start of the monsoon, it is expected to increase now. Intra-day, the Sensex rose 374 points to a new record high of 77366.77 and finally closed at a new high of 77301.14, up 308.37 points. Intra-day, the spot Nifty rose 113.45 points to a new record high of 23579.05 and finally closed 92.30 points higher at a new record high of 23557.90.
Banking stocks in focus: IDFC Bank, ICICI, Axis, HDFC gain
Funds were evaluating banking stocks today, BSE Bankex index closed up 474.58 points at 57339.35. IDFC First Bank rose by Rs 3.41 to Rs 81.42, ICICI Bank rose by Rs 17.20 to Rs 1123.05, Axis Bank rose by Rs 10.10 to Rs 1190.65, HDFC Bank rose by Rs 11.30 to Rs 1608.75, State Bank of India rose by Rs 4.40 to Rs 844.60, AU Small Bank rose by Rs 4.15 to Rs 665.15.

Market breadth remains positive as funds flock to small, mid cap stocks: 2167 stocks closed positive.
With Sensex, Nifty hitting new highs, the market breadth remained positive as selected funds continued to gain value in small, mid cap, cash stocks.
