Second earthquake of 4.0 magnitude felt in New York, USGS predicts aftershocks

New Delhi: The United States got an unpleasant surprise on Friday in New York City and New Jersey, when a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the two major cities at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). Even though there are no reports of any casualties or major injuries, the earthquakes in these two cities have been shocking to say the least since they are not cities that see earthquakes regularly, unlike countries like Japan. Eight hours after that earthquake, another earthquake was felt in New York, with a reported magnitude of 4.0 and its epicenter in New Jersey. Here's what the United States Geological Survey has to say about the aftershocks that cities could feel over the next month and beyond…

Second earthquake in New York City

As mentioned earlier, after a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck New York and New Jersey, eight hours later a second earthquake, or a magnitude 4.0, struck NYC. The second earthquake also did not cause any major damage. “Just felt a shock in New Jersey. Please follow the emergency guidance below and avoid calling 911 unless you have a true emergency,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wrote on Twitter. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul also confirmed this, writing on Twitter, “The aftershock of a 4.0 earthquake that hit New Jersey this morning has just arrived. We are continuing to review critical infrastructure and there are no reports of significant damage at this time,” she said.

The epicenter was reported 7.4 miles northwest of Bridgewater, just over the county line in Somerset County. According to NBC New York, this shock was much deeper than the initial earthquake, about 5.6 miles deep, which explains why it may not have been felt by many people. Notably, this was the second shock reported. Earlier, a much smaller aftershock of magnitude 2.0 was reported by the USGS in Bedminster, New Jersey around 11:20 am.

Earthquake in New York: Shaking forecast by USGS

Talking about shaking predictions for the United States, especially New York City and New Jersey, here is what the United States Geological Survey has to say about it. In the already affected area, there is a 38 per cent chance of at least 10 aftershocks of around 3.0 magnitude within the coming week, the Times Now report quoted the USGS as saying. Additionally, there is an 8 percent chance of a magnitude 4.0 aftershock and a one percent chance of a magnitude 5.01 earthquake (aftershock). According to Times Now, USGS has said that there is a 46 percent chance of a 3.0 aftershock occurring within the next month.
