New diabetes drugs: Scientists have discovered a drug therapy that can completely eliminate diabetes. According to the journal Science Translational Medicine, this revolutionary drug therapy can increase insulin production by up to 700 percent by activating beta cells in the pancreas.
Till now it was believed that diabetes cannot be cured but according to new research, diabetes can be defeated with this therapy. Its use on rats has been 100 percent successful. If it succeeds in humans, then it will definitely be a lifesaver for millions of people.
Loss of beta cells causes diabetes
In fact, if the pancreas is healthy, its beta cells produce insulin properly. But if the beta cells are damaged, insulin production decreases. Usually beta cells are damaged or do not work. Because of this, people suffering from dangerous types of diabetes have to take insulin daily. Research has been going on for years to activate beta cells.
Some research is being done on techniques to revive stem cells and activate beta cells. However, all this has not become a reality yet. Now scientists from Mount Sinai and City of Hope in New York have successfully used the method of activating beta cells through drug therapy on mice.
700 percent increase in beta cells
In a new study, through the drug, beta cells will start forming automatically within the body. After this, sufficient insulin will start being produced within three months. According to the report, this therapy includes two drugs – Harmine which is a natural compound found in some plants and the other drug is GLP1 receptor, which is a weight loss drug.
The hormone inhibits the DYRK1A enzyme in beta cells. This enzyme inhibits the production of insulin. This therapy has been successfully used in mice suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Scientists transplanted damaged human beta cells into mice and then injected them with the therapy. The study found a 700 percent increase in beta cells within three months.
