New Delhi, 23 October (Hindustan Reporter). Now the Gram Panchayats of the country will be able to get information about weather forecast five days a week. The Panchayati Raj Ministry has started preparations for this. The initiative will be launched at Vigyan Bhawan on Thursday in collaboration with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, India Meteorological Department and Ministry of Earth Sciences. The Panchayati Raj Ministry gave this information in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the inauguration ceremony was attended by Panchayati Raj Minister Lalan Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences (Independent Charge) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Panchayati Raj Prof. Many prominent people including SP Singh Baghel, Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj Vivek Bhardwaj, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences Dr. M. Ravichandran, Director General of India Meteorological Department Dr. Mrityunjay Mahapatra will be present.
The statement said that local weather forecasts will be available for the first time at the gram panchayat level with extended sensor coverage by the meteorological department. The weather forecasts will be disseminated through the ministry's digital platform e-Gram Swaraj. This initiative will prove effective in strengthening grassroots governance, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, making rural populations more climate resilient and addressing environmental challenges.
This will provide gram panchayats with daily information about temperature, rainfall, wind speed and cloud cover, which will help farmers plan sowing, irrigation and harvesting activities and take important decisions. These tools will also strengthen disaster management and infrastructure planning. Additionally, SMS alerts will be sent to Panchayat representatives regarding weather events like cyclones and heavy rainfall, ensuring immediate action to protect lives, crops and property. This effort is a transformative step towards building climate-resilient communities at the grassroots level.
A training workshop on “Weather Forecasting at Gram Panchayat Level” will be organized on this occasion. More than 200 participants including elected representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions and State Panchayati Raj Officers will participate in this workshop. This training session will provide the Panchayat representatives and workers at the grassroots with the knowledge and skills to effectively use weather forecasting tools and resources to enable them to take climate resilient decisions in their communities.
