A wonderful good news has emerged for the Indian youth who dream of doing their dream job while roaming in the beautiful valleys of Europe. Spain, a major country in Europe, has made its ‘Digital Nomad Visa’ scheme even easier and attractive for Indian professionals, freelancers and remote working employees. Under this scheme, Indian citizens can now work for their Indian or international company while living in the beautiful valleys, beaches and historical cities of Spain. This means that the dream of traveling to Europe along with work can now be fulfilled without any break from job.
Under this scheme, eligible applicants initially get a visa for 1 year and a residence permit for up to 3 years if applying from Spain, which can be further extended up to 5 years. Not only this, after completion of 5 years the path to apply for Permanent Residency also opens.
The Digital Nomad Visa is a special visa that allows remote workers to legally live and work in a foreign country. The biggest advantage of this plan of Spain is that Indian professionals will not need to leave their jobs. They can live and work in Spanish cities like Barcelona, Madrid or Valencia and can easily travel on weekends to all 29 European countries in the Schengen Area without any separate visa.
Apart from this, the Spanish government has also given special exemption in taxes for the holders of this visa. Non-resident professionals covered under this scheme have to pay income tax at a concessional rate of only 24% in the initial years instead of the usual 47%.
There are some key conditions that Indian citizens need to fulfill to apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa:
-
Income Requirement: The minimum monthly income of the main applicant must be at least 200% of Spain’s minimum wage (approximately €2,849 per month i.e. approximately Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 2.6 lakh).
-
Remote job or freelancing: The applicant must work for a company that is registered outside Spain, or must be freelancing for international clients. (A maximum of 20% of total revenue can be earned from Spanish clients).
-
Experience or Educational Qualification: The applicant should have at least 3 years of work experience in the relevant field or a graduate/post-graduate degree from a recognized university.
-
Health Insurance and Clean Criminal Record: It is mandatory to have full health insurance valid in Spain and a police clearance certificate for the last 5 years.
There are two main ways to apply for this visa. The first way is that the applicant can apply for a 1 year National ‘D’ visa through the Spanish Consulate (Consulate/BLS Centre) located in India. Another way is that if the applicant is already legally present in Spain on a tourist or Schengen visa, he or she can obtain a 3-year residence permit directly by applying online to Spain’s Large Business Division (UGE-CE).
The application process usually takes 15 to 45 business days. Applicants can also bring their spouse and children with them under this visa, for which proof of additional financial income is required. This scheme has emerged as a golden opportunity for Indian tech professionals, designers, and content creators looking for work-life balance and European lifestyle.
