SC orders Ramdev, Balakrishna to appear without reply to notice

The Supreme Court has asked Acharya Balkrishna, managing director of Ayurvedic company Patanjali Ayurveda, and yoga guru Ramdev to appear on the next date of hearing. The Supreme Court had sent contempt notice to Patanjali and Balkrishna for giving misleading advertisements regarding the treatment of diseases, but they did not reply to the court. The Supreme Court is hearing a petition by the Indian Medical Association in which Ramdev has been accused of running a campaign to defame vaccination and modern medicine. A bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah rapped the company and Balkrishna for not filing their reply to the notice issued earlier by the court and also issued show cause notice as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. Earlier, the Supreme Court had rapped yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurveda for violating earlier assurances given to the court about its products and making false claims related to the efficacy of the medicines.

What is IMA's allegation?

IMA has alleged that Patanjali launched a defamatory campaign against Covid-19 vaccination. In this regard, the court warned that Patanjali should stop making false and misleading advertisements of Ayurveda. The court has envisaged a fine of up to Rs 1 crore for each product making false claims of treating certain diseases.
