Most senior citizens rely heavily on the country’s largest and safest bank—State Bank of India (SBI)—to meet regular monthly expenses after retirement. If an elderly person wants a fixed income every month while protecting the lump sum capital received from Provident Fund (PF) or gratuity on retirement, then SBI’s Non-Cumulative Fixed Deposit (Monthly Interest Payout Scheme / SBI Special Term Deposit) is a popular option. When you choose the cumulative option in FD, the interest is paid together on maturity; But on choosing ‘Monthly Payout’ option, the bank transfers the fixed interest directly to your savings or pension account on a fixed date of every month while keeping your principal amount safe.

To senior citizens (aged 60 years and above), SBI offers additional interest ranging from 0.50% (50 basis points) to 1.00% (100 basis points) compared to general citizens on all tenures. In the ‘SBI We-Care’ scheme, operated for a period of 5 years to 10 years, the highest annual interest rate of 7.05% is given to senior citizens. If a senior citizen deposits ₹10,00,000 (ten lakh rupees) in SBI, it is important to understand the full details of how much interest he will get every month for different periods.

There is a technical rule to keep in mind when it comes to monthly interest payouts. Official interest rates of banks are always quoted annually on the basis of quarterly compounding. When a customer wants to take the interest every month instead of 3 months, the bank calculates it based on the discounted monthly factor so that the annual yield remains the same. At a simple and practical level, the monthly interest on the principal amount of ₹10 lakh is determined based on the applicable annual rate as follows:

Based on the current interest rates offered by SBI to senior citizens, the monthly and annual income on a deposit of ₹10 lakh is as follows:

Tenure Senior Citizen Interest Rate (PA) estimated interest every month Total interest income during the year
1 year to less than 2 years 6.75% approximately ₹5,600 ₹67,500
2 years to less than 3 years 6.90% Approximately ₹5,720 ₹69,000
