
In Sanatan Dharma, Amavasya date of Ashwin month is considered a special and very sacred place. on this date Sarvapitru Amavasya (Sarvapitru Amavasya 2026) Or known as Mahalaya Amavasya. This is the last and most important day of Pitru Paksha (Shraddh Paksha), on which all the ancestors who came to earth return to their world.
The day of Sarvapitri Amavasya is dedicated to all those ancestors whose date of death is not remembered by their family members or who due to some reason are not able to perform their Shraddha and Tarpan during the entire Pitru Paksha. On this day, food is especially offered to Brahmins for the peace, salvation and blessings of the ancestors’ souls. According to religious beliefs, by hosting a Brahmin feast on Sarvapitri Amavasya, the ancestors are completely satisfied and depart after giving blessings.
According to the scriptures, while serving food to Brahmins on the last day of Pitru Paksha i.e. on Sarvapitri Amavasya, certain rules should be strictly followed, otherwise the full results of the puja are not achieved:

Bathing and purification: On the day of Amavasya, wake up early in the morning, take bath, meditate and with a pure heart prepare to offer prayers and worship to your ancestors. After this, respectfully invite the Brahmins to your home.

Posture and Direction: Make the Brahmins who come home sit on clean and sacred seats. Take special care that while serving food the Brahmin’s face east or north direction It should be towards , because both these directions are considered best for religious and spiritual rituals.

Peace of mind: While serving food, keep your mind completely calm and do not get angry or hasty in any way. Feed them with full hospitality.

Donation-Dakshina: After the meal, donate food, money, clothes and fruits to the Brahmins as per your capacity and seek blessings by touching their feet.
On this day dedicated to ancestors, special attention is paid to the purity of food of Brahmins. Pure kheer made of milk, rice and sugar must be included in the food, because kheer is very dear to the ancestors. Apart from this, satvik dal, vegetables, puri, fresh fruits and traditional sweets should be served in the meal. The food should be completely without onion and garlic (Satvik).
