Hamirpur, 05 August (HS). On the third Monday of Shravan month, thousands of Shiv devotees have performed Jalabhishek in Sangameshwar Shiv temple on the banks of river Yamuna. This temple was built during the reign of Kumar Gupta, where the idols of Shiv and Parvati are installed together in one half. This temple was submerged in the flood of Yamuna river decades ago, but this temple made of limestone remained completely safe.

Sangameshwar temple, situated on the banks of river Yamuna near Merapur village, about five km away from the district, still preserves the glory of its past. This temple is one of the four Dhams of India, renowned everywhere for its grandeur, in which the idols of Shiva and Parvati are installed together in one half. That is why this temple is also known as Sangameshwar.

It is believed that a cow comes to this temple from across the Yamuna river every day and offers its milk to the Shivling. However, no one has been able to see it till date. But the next morning milk is seen filled around the Shiv Linga.

Litterateur Dr. Bhavanidin Prajapati said that unprecedented artistic activity was established in the whole of India at that time. The best achievement of Gupta period architecture was the construction of temples. Some of the main features of the temples were that the temples were always built on high platforms. There were stairs around the platform and idols of gods were installed in the sanctum sanctorum inside the temple. There was a circumambulatory path around the sanctum sanctorum. Along with this, creepers were engraved on the pillars. The Sangameshwar temple here is completely true to the tradition of temple architecture of the Gupta period. The then regional archaeological officer of Jhansi, Dr. SK Dubey said that other heritage sites including Sangameshwar in Hamirpur are not yet under the Archaeology. Only Khandeh and Kariyari and Kalinjar temples are also under the purview of Archaeology.

When there was a drought, it rained after the Shivling was anointed with Yamuna water

Locals Rajeev Shukla and Baburam Prakash Tripathi told that in the year 1964 and 1966, there was a severe drought in Hamirpur and the surrounding areas. There was chaos everywhere. Then the people of many villages gathered and first brought new pots and then filled them with water from the Yamuna river and the Shivling of this temple was anointed with water from the collective well. After doing Jalabhishek for several days, the Shivling was completely submerged in water, but the small Shivling did not get submerged in water during the Jalabhishek. Due to the water falling from thousands of pots, there was heavy rain in the city and the surrounding areas.

Amazing temples were built within a radius of 25 km between 413 and 455 AD

The history of the temple of Sangameshwar is very old. Litterateur Dr. Bhavanidin Prajapati told that after Chandragupta II, his son Kumar Gupta took over the power of the state. His rule lasted from 413 AD to 455 AD. Sangameshwar temple was built during this period. Just 25 miles north of this temple, in Bhitar village Kanpur Nagar, there is also a Gupta period temple where many researchers come every year to do research. There are no idols in this Gupta period temple of Bhitar village, despite this, people go every year to see and understand the architecture of the Gupta period.
