Mumbai: Despite lakhs of claims by Tantra, adulterated Mawa sweets are being sold in abundance during Diwali festivals. All policies have been implemented including labeling of expiry dates when selling sweets.
After the festival of Diwali, adulterated mawa is being distributed for the last few days. Various types of sweets are being made and sold from this adulterated mawa. Sweets made from this adulterated mawa are being sold on carts at various places. To prevent adulteration and food poisoning, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has made it mandatory to label loose sweets with the date of manufacture and expiry date. But, the rules regarding sweet sellers in Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar have been put on hold. Open sale of these sweets has created health problems for the city residents.
Adulterated Mawa is brought from Rajasthan and Gujarat state through highway route. Smuggling of this mawa is done very cleverly. These beans are distributed to wholesalers in Vasai-Virar, Thane and Mumbai. The storage and sale of this mawa requires a license from the Food and Drug Administration. Also, it is important to store this mawa at a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Otherwise these mawa get spoiled within three days. But, no such rules are followed. These beans are sold at a price of Rs 200 to 250 per kg. Sweets and other products made from this mawa are sold to consumers at a price of Rs 400 to Rs 800 per kilogram.
Adulterated sweets are dangerous for kidneys!
