The famous Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium located in the capital of India, Delhi, which has been an important chapter in the history of sports, is now on the verge of becoming history. The Sports Ministry has decided to demolish this stadium so that a modern sports city can be built in its 102-acre area. Renovated at a cost of ₹961 crore for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the stadium will now become a medium to realize India’s dream of hosting the 2036 Olympics.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be demolished

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was built for the 1982 Asian Games. With a capacity of 60,000 spectators, this stadium is one of the most prestigious stadiums in the country. It was renovated ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games at an estimated cost of Rs 961 crore. Apart from the 2010 Commonwealth Games, it has hosted major events such as the 2017 Under-17 FIFA World Cup. Recently it also hosted the first World Para Athletics Championships. Currently, the complex houses a football stadium and athletics track, an archery academy, badminton courts and offices of the Sports Authority of India, National Anti-Doping Agency and National Dope Testing Laboratory.

Features for all major sports, players

A source in the Sports Ministry said that a sports city will be built by demolishing the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. It will have facilities for all major sports as well as accommodation for the players. However, the plan is still a proposal, so the timeline for the project has not been decided yet. Sports cities in Qatar and Australia are being evaluated to finalize the design. An example is the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, which has facilities for cricket, water sports, tennis and athletics.

These facilities will be there in the new sports city

The new Sports City will be a dedicated venue for all major sports, which will also include accommodation for athletes. Athletes will be able to stay near the stadium when traveling to participate in an event. This project is currently in the concept stage. The government is studying models from around the world, particularly Doha Sports City, which spans 618 acres and was built for the 2006 Asian Games. The city also hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
