When Ravichandran Ashwin suddenly announced his retirement during the Australia tour, he surprised everyone. Meanwhile, reports were coming that Indian captain Rohit Sharma was also going to say goodbye to Test cricket. Especially after the Boxing Day Test played in Melbourne, Rohit had made up his mind to retire. However, at the request of some of his well-wishers, he changed his decision and decided to continue the game.
Rohit’s struggling series
Rohit Sharma missed the first match of the series due to the birth of his second child. He returned in the Adelaide Test, where he got a chance to play in the middle order as KL Rahul had performed well in Perth. However, Rohit’s performance in both the Adelaide and Gabba matches was disappointing. Ultimately he took the difficult decision of opening the innings, due to which Shubman Gill had to sit out and KL Rahul had to come in at number three. But, this new strategy of Rohit did not work in Melbourne also.
Idea of retirement and unhappiness of Gautam Gambhir
According to a report in Times of India, Rohit Sharma was about to become the second player after Ravichandran Ashwin to retire, but people close to him stopped him from doing so.
An unnamed source said, “Rohit had made up his mind to retire after MCG. Had his well-wishers not persuaded him to change his mind, we could have seen another retirement in Australia.”
However, head coach Gautam Gambhir did not like Rohit’s decision not to retire. In fact, Rohit did not even participate in the last Test played in Sydney. There were many differences between the two on team combination, toss and other issues. Both Gambhir and Rohit are preparing for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, which could be the last tournament for many senior players, so the pressure on them to perform is increasing.
