The country is currently facing severe cold. Roads are closed due to snowfall in hilly areas. Himachal Police rescued 5000 stranded tourists and took them to safe places. Many roads are closed in Kashmir also. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert.
Heavy snowfall is currently occurring in Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. People’s lives have become disrupted due to this snowfall. Snowfall is becoming more of a problem than a joy for tourists. Nearly 5,000 tourists got stuck in the Solang Canal amid heavy snowfall in Kullu district on Friday. Along with this, 1000 vehicles also got stuck, the police along with its team evacuated all the tourists.
Kullu Police wrote in a post on the social media platform that there were about 5000 tourists in these vehicles. Kullu Police has rescued the vehicles and tourists and taken them to a safe place. Rescue work is still going on.
Snowfall has started in Kashmir
Due to western disturbance, light snowfall occurred in most parts of Kashmir including the plains. Snowfall started in the high altitude areas in the morning, while snowfall in the plains including Srinagar occurred in the afternoon. Three inches of snowfall was recorded in Srinagar city. Apart from Srinagar, the first snowfall of the season was also recorded in the plains of Ganderbal, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts.
2000 vehicles stranded amid snowfall in Kashmir
Srinagar-Leh Highway and Mughal Road have also been closed due to snowfall. Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was also affected, leaving around 2,000 vehicles stranded. Regarding this, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that efforts are being made to remove snow.
He further wrote that today I drove the car from Jammu to Srinagar. It was snowing continuously from Banihal to Srinagar. The situation was quite dangerous. I understand that around 2000 vehicles are stranded between the tunnel and Qazigund. Efforts are underway to rescue the stranded vehicles.
Orange alert issued in Himachal
On Friday, heavy rain and snowfall was recorded in six districts of Himachal, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla and Kinnaur. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert of snowfall and cold wave. There is a possibility of severe cold in these areas along with Mandi, Kullu and Chamba till January 1. IMD has advised residents and tourists to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
