Cashless treatment for road accident victims: Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims across the country. Under which the government will provide seven days of free treatment or five thousand rupees to road accident victims. Will provide treatment expenses up to Rs 1.5 lakh. This pilot project was started in Chandigarh and Assam in August last year. After its successful implementation, it has now been announced to be implemented in the entire country.
To avail the benefit of this scheme, the accident will have to be immediately reported to the police. Those who lodge a police complaint immediately after the accident or within 24 hours will get the benefit of cashless treatment. In which the injured person will be given compensation for seven days or a maximum of Rs 1 lakh. Treatment expenses up to Rs 1.5 lakh will be covered.
Rs 2 lakh assistance in hit and run cases
Gadkari said that in the last one year, 1.80 lakh people have lost their lives in road accidents. In case of hit and run, the government will provide financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased. To reduce accidents, the government is giving priority to road safety.
66 percent of those who die in accidents are youth
Along with the announcement of the new scheme, the Union Transport Minister also presented the data of road accidents. According to which, a total of 1.80 lakh people have lost their lives in road accidents in 2024. In which 30,000 people died due to not wearing helmets. It is noteworthy that 66 percent of these dead people belonged to the youth group of 18 to 34 years.
10000 children lost their lives due to road safety lapses
Gadkari said that around 10 thousand children have lost their lives in 2024 due to lack of proper exits and entrances in our schools and colleges. Although there are rules for school auto rickshaws and mini buses, but due to non-compliance of these, children also become victims of accidents. We will consider all the shortcomings and try to minimize them. Everyone will have to make joint efforts to reduce the incidents of road accidents. Nitin Gadkari said this in a meeting held with transport ministers of all states and union territories on Tuesday.
