A huge ransom of Rs 5 crore was demanded from a reputed doctor of Ranchi for saving his life, and when the doctor refused to pay the money, the accused called him not once or twice but a total of 42 times and continuously threatened him with murder. Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, has been the target of criminals and notorious gangsters for some time now, where businessmen and doctors are often targeted and extortion money worth crores is demanded. In this latest case, when a renowned doctor started receiving continuous threats from unknown numbers, his entire family and the hospital management were put under deep mental stress. The audacity of the criminals had increased to such an extent that along with doing recce of the doctor’s clinic and house, they were constantly making him feel that he was on their radar all the time. Such crimes against the intellectual class like doctors not only openly challenge the law and order of the society, but also prove how vicious criminals try to dodge the police by using technology. Senior officers of Ranchi Police attached this case to their prestige and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to break this entire chain of criminals.
42 phone calls and dreadful threats to kill
The technical evidence found by the police during the investigation surprised even the police officers themselves. The main accused had left no stone unturned to put pressure on the doctor and had called the doctor a total of 42 times through different virtual numbers and internet calls within just a few days. In every call, a ransom demand of Rs 5 crore was repeated and a warning was given that if the information was not given to the police or the money was not delivered, the doctor and his family members would be wiped out from the world. Amidst such mental torture and an atmosphere of fear, the doctor showed courage and immediately contacted the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Ranchi and the local police station. Realizing the seriousness of the matter, the police immediately registered an FIR against unknown accused and started tracing the location of the calls with the help of technical surveillance cell, which eventually reached success.
Complete operation of arrest of main accused by special team of police
Ranchi Police and the technical team of Cyber Cell worked day and night to chase the digital clues that were being used to demand extortion. Apart from various locations in Jharkhand, the police also activated its intelligence units in neighboring states so that the main kingpin could be nabbed. Eventually the police got solid clues and on the basis of a secret information, they raided a suspicious area of Ranchi and arrested the main accused. During police interrogation, the mobile phones and SIM cards which were used to threaten the doctor were also recovered from the accused. During initial interrogation, the accused has confessed to his crime and has also revealed that some of his other local associates were also involved in this conspiracy, in search of whom the police are now continuously conducting raids.

As soon as the news of the arrest of the main accused was received, doctors, nursing home operators and business organizations of Ranchi heaved a sigh of relief. This arrest has sent a strong message to the criminals that it is impossible to escape the long arm of the law. Indian Medical Association (IMA) Jharkhand Chapter and local doctors have expressed their gratitude for this prompt and commendable action of the police administration, and have also demanded that the security arrangements of all the leading doctors and businessmen of the city should be further strengthened. Police officials say that no other criminal involved in this case will be spared and very soon everyone will be brought before the court and given the harshest punishment, so that no one can dare to repeat such incidents in the future.
