Kolkata, September 11 (HS). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday summoned Prasun Chatterjee, personal assistant of Sandip Ghosh, for questioning as part of its investigation into financial irregularities at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sandip Ghosh is the former and controversial principal of RG Kar Medical College and is currently in judicial custody.
Prasun Chatterjee has been directed to appear at the ED office in Salt Lake on the northern outskirts of Kolkata on Wednesday. However, he has not appeared till the time of writing the news at 5 pm.
On September 6, ED officials conducted raids and searches at several places, including the residence of Chatterjee in Subhashgram in South 24 Parganas district. Incriminating documents were seized from there and he was detained for a long time and questioned.
According to sources, during the scrutiny of the seized documents, some properties were found in the name of Chatterjee, which were disproportionate to his income.
Sources said the fresh summons have been issued to Chatterjee so that the investigating officer can question him about the source of funds for purchasing the properties.
During the investigation, it was also revealed that Ghosh had used his influence to appoint Chatterjee as his personal assistant while Chatterjee was officially working as a data operator at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
The investigation revealed that Chatterjee would come to the Calcutta National Medical College every morning, sign the attendance register there, and then go to the R.G. Kar Medical College, about eight kilometres away, where he worked as Ghosh's personal assistant.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also conducting a parallel investigation into the financial irregularities in RG Kar as well as the rape and murder of a woman doctor. While the CBI investigation is court-directed and monitored, the ED has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report, making a suo motu entry in the case.
