The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed disappointment over the pension of retired High Court judges. The court said that retired judges of the High Court are getting only Rs 10 to 15 thousand pension. This is a very sad situation. The bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Vishwanathan said that it is not right to adopt a legal approach in every case.
In some cases, humanitarian approach should also be adopted. The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard the petition filed on the issue of pension of High Court judges. Attorney General Venkataraman, appearing for the government, requested the bench to hear the case in January. The government will try to find a solution to this issue. The bench said that it would be better if you explain to the government that the interference of the Supreme Court should be avoided. This matter will not be decided on a case-by-case basis. Whatever decision the Supreme Court takes will be applicable to the High Court judge. After this, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the case till January 8. The issue of pension of retired High Court judges has already been raised in the Supreme Court. Last month, the Supreme Court was surprised to learn that some retired High Court judges were getting pension ranging from Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000. The Supreme Court is hearing a petition filed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
Hearing a separate petition in March, the Supreme Court had also said that the pension of retired high court judges promoted from district courts should also be calculated on the basis of their last salary.
