Resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goyal before Lok Sabha elections, President approved

Even before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections in the coming weeks, a big news has come out. Election Commissioner Arun Goyal has resigned from his post. His tenure was till 2027. But he has resigned from his post and this resignation given by Arun Goyal has been approved by President Draupadi Murmu. One post of Election Commissioner is already vacant in the Election Commission. After Goyal's resignation, now Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar is taking charge. Apart from the Chief Election Commissioner, there are two other commissioners in the Election Commission. Earlier one post was vacant after which Arun Goyal has resigned. In such a situation, now both these posts are vacant.

Arun Goyal's resignation accepted

There are indications that Lok Sabha elections will be announced next week. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will now be responsible for the smooth conduct of the elections. Arun Goyal visited some states with Rajiv Kumar and saw how the election preparations were going on. Now suddenly he has hastily left his post. The President has accepted his resignation. It has been clarified by the President's Office that this resignation has been accepted from 9 March 2024 i.e. today.

Arun Goyal's appointment in controversy

Arun Goyal is a 1985 batch IS officer. He took voluntary retirement on 18 November 2022. Immediately after this, i.e. on 19 November 2022, he was appointed Election Commissioner. His appointment was surrounded by controversies. This appointment was also challenged in the Supreme Court. If Arun Goyal has taken voluntary retirement then why was he given the post of Election Commissioner so soon? The Supreme Court had asked the government.
