New Delhi, July 13 (HS). The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved a research proposal on the value addition of dredged sediments (silt, garbage etc. deposited in the sediments of lakes, rivers, ports and other water bodies). The approved estimated cost of this project is Rs 46,47,380 / -. It will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) over a period of three years. The ministry gave this information in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to the ministry, the proposal was discussed in detail in the 45th Research Committee meeting chaired by Additional Secretary (Ports, Shipping and Waterways). After detailed discussion, the Research Committee recommended the proposal for further consideration in view of the potential benefits of the study. After this recommendation, the proposal has been officially approved. By converting dredged sediments into useful construction materials, environmental problems can be resolved and efficient use of resources can be ensured.
