Bihar liquor ban: There has been tremendous benefit from the liquor ban in Bihar. Due to the liquor ban in Bihar in 2016, the daily and weekly consumption of alcohol has decreased by 24 lakhs (7.8%). Not only this, cases of sexual violence have decreased by 21 lakhs (3.6%). This has come to light in a new study published in 'The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia Journal'.
According to the report, 18 lakh men in the state have also been saved from obesity due to prohibition. Researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute of America were also included in the team of researchers. The researchers analyzed the data of national and district-level health and door-to-door surveys. The authors of the study said that strict alcohol control policies have led to significant improvement in violence and health in the state.
The number of alcoholics was higher before prohibition
Before the ban, alcohol consumption among men in Bihar rose from 9.7% to 15%, while in neighbouring states it rose from 7.2% to 10.3%, the researchers said. That has changed since the ban. Alcohol consumption in Bihar fell by 7.8%, while in neighbouring states it rose to 10.4%.
Similarly, violence against women has also decreased in Bihar. The rate of such violent acts of passion has decreased by 4.6% and sexual violence has decreased by 3.6%.
