Kolkata, September 17 (HS). West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to remove Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal from his post is not enough. He demanded that he should be arrested for misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence in the rape and murder case that took place at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Sukanta Majumdar said, “The arrest of former SHO of Tala police station Abhijit Mandal by CBI officials proves that the city police had tried to tamper with evidence. In such a situation, only removal from the post is not enough. If the police commissioner is guilty, he should be punished. He should not be protected like this.”
He also said that due to massive public pressure, the chief minister had to remove the Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner of North Division, Director of Health Services and Director of Medical Education from their posts.
Sukanta Majumdar said, “The pressure was not just from the protesting junior doctors, but there were also spontaneous demonstrations in various parts of the state against rape and murder. The chief minister got scared of these protests and finally took this decision.”
Opposition leader Shubhendu Adhikari also supported Sukanta Majumdar's views and said that mere transfer of some officers would not be enough. Those who played a key role in tampering with evidence should be sent to jail.
Shubhendu Adhikari said, “Whatever happened after this brutal rape and murder cannot be the work of a few officials. Everyone knows that nothing happens in West Bengal without the permission and instructions of Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee should take full responsibility for this matter, as she is also the Health and Home Minister of the state. She should resign and her role in this whole matter should be properly investigated.”
