Supreme Court: The Supreme Court has rejected the review petition on the decision on gay marriage. In its judgment on October 17, 2023, the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court asserted, ‘We cannot recognize gay marriage, as it is a matter within the jurisdiction of Parliament. However, the Supreme Court accepted the government’s proposal to set up a panel to give social and legal rights to gay couples.
Reconstitution of new bench
Dissatisfied with the decision of the Supreme Court, the petitioners, keeping in mind the public interest in the case, had filed a review petition in the court in July last year. However, a new bench had to be constituted after the retirement of Justice SK Kaul, Justice Ravindra Bhatt, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Kohli. Justice Sanjiv Khanna who is currently the Chief Justice. He had distanced himself from this matter last year.
