The national festival of Independence Day is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country, but on this occasion the rhetoric in the political circles is also at its peak. Samajwadi Party (SP) national president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the Independence Day address given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the ramparts of the Red Fort. While talking to journalists at the state office of Samajwadi Party in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav expressed strong objection to the Prime Minister’s statement in which the Women’s Reservation Bill was mentioned. The SP chief bluntly said that Red Fort is the most prestigious place in the country and it is not a place to lie, hence such statements should not be made from there.
Akhilesh’s direct challenge to the government on women’s reservation
Akhilesh Yadav, clarifying his point, said that everyone knows that the Women’s Reservation Act has been successfully passed by the Parliament in the year 2023 itself. In such a situation, it is not right for the Prime Minister to talk about this afresh and appeal for cooperation. Giving an open challenge to the Central and State governments, the SP chief said that if they are really serious about giving women their rights and political representation, then they should immediately implement this Women’s Reservation Law in the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He claimed that the Samajwadi Party is fully prepared for this, so that those eligible women who have been waiting for their turn for a long time will also get an opportunity to contest the elections. Yadav’s main reference was to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ passed unanimously by Parliament in September 2023, which could not be implemented in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Big attack on BJP regarding ‘Partition Horrors Memorial Day’
The SP President also fiercely targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party and its affiliated organizations regarding the celebrations of ‘Partition Disaster Memorial Day’ celebrated in the country. Making serious allegations, he said that BJP and their hidden allies celebrate this day because for them the partition of the country has been a ‘matter of celebration’. Akhilesh sarcastically said that whether those people had contributed in the historical movement of freedom struggle or not, they definitely played a role during the partition of the country. He stressed that the country is governed only by the scope of the Constitution and its basic sentiments, and if the country’s democracy has to be protected in the long run, we all have to work together to further strengthen the Constitution.
Sharp questions raised regarding tricolor and nationalism
Taking on the BJP on the issues of respect for the tricolor and nationalism, Akhilesh Yadav said that his nationalism is limited to only one colour, whereas socialist nationalism is ‘multi-coloured’ which believes in taking every class and every idea along. He alleged that in the past there were many places and organizations where the tricolor national flag was never hoisted. Taking a jibe, he said that such people should now at least run ‘Har Mana Tiranga’ campaign so that they can prove to the people of the country that the feeling of true patriotism is present in their hearts like the common citizens.
Government surrounded on per capita income, ration distribution and inflation
Raising questions on the economic conditions of the country and Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav said that on one hand the government makes tall claims of increasing the per capita income of the country, while on the other hand crores of families of the country have to be given free ration. He claimed that there would hardly be any other country in the world where such huge quantities of free ration have to be provided to the poor, and especially in the largest state like Uttar Pradesh, the situation is even more serious. Along with this, he also strongly criticized the government regarding the continuously increasing inflation in the country, rising prices of petrol and diesel, adulteration in food items and the economy being affected due to foreign policies.
Issue of poor education system and closure of primary schools
Expressing concern over the field of education, the SP chief said that the education system in India is gradually becoming very weak. Making a comparison, he said that in developed countries, education, good health services, medical facilities and availability of medicines are always given first priority, whereas the situation in India is completely opposite. Akhilesh Yadav made a big claim and said that the maximum number of primary schools in the country have been closed in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Counting the figures, he said that about 26 thousand schools have been closed in Uttar Pradesh alone, while about one lakh primary schools have been locked across the country, which is a big crisis for the bright future of the country.
