Team India’s former head coach Ravi Shastri and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting praised the record number of spectators during the five-match Test series played between India and Australia. Both the greats said that this historic trophy is moving towards becoming the biggest rivalry in cricket and said that in the coming time, it can even leave behind the Ashes series.
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, especially the Boxing Day Test match played in Melbourne, the number of spectators broke all records. 375,000 people came to watch this match, which left behind a 90-year-old record. A total of 8,37,000 spectators came to the stadium to watch the matches in the entire series, which is a new record.
Shastri: “The audience’s craze in BGT is unique”
Ravi Shastri said in ‘ICC Review’, “In today’s time, when people can take advantage of television, OTT platforms and other facilities, it is incredible to have such a large number of spectators reaching the stadium. Melbourne’s figure (3,75,000) has broken the record of Don Bradman’s era. “It shows that the rivalry between the two teams is extraordinary in the modern era.”
Ricky Ponting: “Fans showed passion for Test cricket”
Ponting supported Ravi Shastri and said, “The figure of 8,37,000 spectators is unique. If the Test had been completed in Brisbane and there had been no rain, this number could have been higher. “The fans have proven that they understand the quality of both teams and want to be a part of this great form of Test cricket.”
Ponting also said that if the Ashes series against England does not match the viewership of BGT, it will become clear that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has become the biggest cricket rivalry in the world.
Audience figures show new heights
The record attendance during the Test matches in Melbourne, Sydney, and other places in this series has shown that the competition between India and Australia can now be bigger than the Ashes.
