A Yemeni national was hanged on Saturday in the southwestern region of Najran on drug trafficking charges. The total number of foreigners awarded death penalty this year has reached 101.
Saudi Arabia has hanged 34 foreign nationals in the years 2022 and 2023. Taha al-Haji, legal director of ESOHR, said it was the first time that Saudi Arabia has executed so many foreigners in a single year.
Saudi Arabia ranks third in terms of executions
According to Amnesty International, Saudi Arabia ranks third after China and Iran in terms of executions.
Death penalty given to the citizens of this country
The foreign nationals who have been hanged include citizens of Pakistan, Yemen, Syria, Nigeria, Egypt, Jordan and Ethiopia. These include 21 citizens of Pakistan, 20 from Yemen, 14 from Syria, 10 from Nigeria, 9 from Egypt, 8 from Jordan and 7 from Ethiopia. Three each from Sudan, India and Afghanistan and one each from Sri Lanka, Eritrea and the Philippines were hanged.
Diplomats and activists say foreign defendants cannot get a fair trial. Convicted foreign nationals become victims of major drug dealers. From arrest to hanging, the accused have to face many difficulties in presenting their case before the court.
