The biggest hurdle behind the standoff between the agitating farmers and the government is the legal guarantee of purchase of farmers' crops at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). However, the truth is that during the tenure of Narendra Modi government at the Centre, there has been a record increase in MSP and a large number of farmers are associated with government procurement. There has also been a record increase in food storage in 10 years. In 10 years, MSP of paddy has increased by about 64 percent and MSP of wheat has increased by 58 percent. Compared to 10 years of the previous UPA government, the Modi government has given farmers Rs. 7.78 lakh crore more on wheat and Rs. Rs 3.18 lakh crore more has been paid. As against Rs 4,40,496.78 crore, the MSP of paddy under the UPA government was Rs. More than Rs 12,18,156 crore has been spent. During the tenure of the UPA government, the MSP of wheat was around Rs 200. 2,26,813 crores were spent whereas during the tenure of Modi government Rs. Rs 5,44,332 crore has been spent. During the tenure of Modi government, food storage capacity has also increased by more than 100 percent. Last year, the government had launched a scheme to develop 700 lakh tonnes of grain storage capacity in the cooperative sector.
