Reasons behind BrahMos missile falling in Pakistan two years ago revealed

Brahmos 965

New Delhi, March 30 (Hindustan Reporter) The Indian Air Force has revealed the reasons behind the accidental firing of the BrahMos combat missile that fell in Pakistan two years ago. Based on the findings of the Court of Inquiry, it has been said that the combat connector of the BrahMos missile was left connected to its 'junction box' and the BrahMos missile was accidentally fired due to a technical fault. The launch of the missile in the neighboring country caused damage to the reputation of the Indian Air Force and the nation. Also the government treasury suffered a loss of Rs 24 crore 90 lakh 85 thousand.

This accident occurred due to a technical error on March 09, 2022, during testing by increasing the range of the missile by upgrading the software. The very next day, Islamabad lodged its protest with New Delhi. After Pakistan's reaction, the Indian government expressed regret over the incident and ordered a high-level court of inquiry. Sharing the findings of the Court of Inquiry set up on March 11, 2022, to probe the incident, the Indian Air Force says it was an incident which 'impacted' India's relations with Pakistan.

In fact, 'Combat Team' Wing Commander Abhinav Sharma, who was convicted in this incident, has challenged the decision of the military court in the Delhi High Court. The Air Force has filed its counter affidavit on this petition on March 29. The Air Force has rejected Wing Commander Sharma's claim that he was not able to prevent the accident. All the activities took place inside the mobile autonomous launcher in his (Sharma's) presence. Disclosing the incident in the Delhi High Court, the Indian Air Force said that the combat connectors of the combat missiles were left connected to the 'junction box' and the unsafe act of launching the missile could not be stopped.

According to Advocate General Wing Commander UN Pathak, 16 witnesses were examined during the Court of Inquiry and Group Captain Saurabh Gupta, Squadron Leader Pranjal Singh and Wing Commander Abhinav Sharma were found guilty of negligence. It was decided to recommend to the President for termination of the services of the three officers. Action for dismissal from service was initiated by issuing a show cause notice under Section 19 of the Air Force Act, 1950 and Rule 16 of the Air Force Rules, 1969. Such a decision was taken in the Indian Air Force after 23 years, as the facts and circumstances of the case required such action.

Commander Pathak told the military court that the international community had also reacted regarding the BrahMos missile firing accident, hence it was appropriate for the three officers to be tried through a court martial. The Court of Inquiry held that the test team knew that the missile's combat connectors were connected to the junction box, yet the firing of the combat missile from the mobile autonomous launcher could not be stopped. The result was that the launch of the missile in the neighboring country caused damage to the reputation of the Indian Air Force and the nation. Also the government treasury suffered a loss of Rs 24 crore 90 lakh 85 thousand.
